Rochester Mayor Malik Evans called on Wednesday for people to put away the phones and be aware of their surroundings while walking and driving. The mayor and Rochester’s police chief spoke in an event designed to increase pedestrian, bike rider and driver safety.

It comes after a couple of hit-and-run accidents that killed pedestrians in Rochester.

The mayor said there have been 2,475 injuries and 62 deaths involving vehicles and bicyclists in the city between 2017 and 2021. He said “when driving, get off your phone, period.”
