The former Academy Coach at Borussia Dortmund joins Bob Lilley as an assistant coach.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Rhinos on Thursday announced, from Capelli Sport Stadium, the addition of Mark Pulisic to the club’s coaching staff as he joins Head Coach Bob Lilley for the 2017 USL season.
Pulisic joins the Rhinos after most recently being an academy coach at renowned German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.
“Bob and I go back a long way, and I wanted an opportunity to come back and coach in the United States,” said Pulisic. “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be and nobody else I’d rather learn from than Bob. I’m excited to work with a coach that is an MLS caliber coach, so I’m very fortunate that he’s here in Rochester and this opportunity came along for me to work with him.”
Pulisic and Lilley were previously teammates on the MISL’s Harrisburg Heat in the 1990s, and Pulisic also had success as a coach in the league following a playing career that saw him score 296 goals for the Heat. He was named the 2007 MISL Coach of the Year for the Detroit Ignition as he led the side to the league’s championship game. He later served as the Ignition’s Director of Soccer Operations.
Additionally, Pulisic previously served as an assistant coach in the USL for the Harrisburg City Islanders in the club’s inaugural season in 2004. Pulisic also founded the women’s soccer program at NCAA Division III Lebanon Valley College, and served as both the men’s and women’s coaches at the school until 2005.
Mark is also the father of U.S. Men’s National Team and Borussia Dortmund starlet Christian.
The Rhinos will kick off the 2017 USL regular season on Saturday, April 1 against Bethlehem Steel FC at Goodman Stadium. The club’s home opener is on Saturday, April 22 when the defending USL Cup champion New York Red Bulls II visit Capelli Sport Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:05 p.m. ET.
