A man is dead after he was shot while threatening police officers with a knife outside of Rochester’s Open Door Mission on West Main Street early Wednesday.
Police say it happened shortly before 3:00 a.m. when they received a call about a man at the homeless shelter with a knife. Officers found the man cutting himself and threatening to injure officers who approached him. The man then moved towards the officers with the knife, and one fired, striking the man in the upper body.
He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Police say the Family and Crisis Intervention Team was not called because the incident happened too quickly.
Main Street was closed from Washington Street to Cascade Drive through the morning rush hour as police investigated.
The victim has not been identified, but the Open Door Mission has released a statement saying the man was one of their guests.
