Police in Phelps have charged a man with resisting arrest, unlawful flight from a police officer and driving without a license after a traffic stop turned into a police chase in Ontario County.
Police say Michael Heidemann was spotted using a hand-held cellphone while driving on Main Street in the village Tuesday evening. He hit the gas and sped away when the officer tried to question him, crashed his car into a field several miles away and was caught by a State Police K9 unit while hiding in the woods off of White Road.
Police soon found the 33-year-old Phelps man had 15 license suspensions and was wanted in Geneva for petit larceny.
