A man who jumped into Irondequoit Bay to help save a pair of children who got in trouble while swimming ended up dying at Strong Memorial Hospital after getting into trouble himself.

Jason Sigelow of Rochester was one of several people being called heroes after they dove into the bay to rescue the nine and ten-year-old boys on Saturday evening. Both were swimming at the Small Boat Harbor when they got into distress and were pounded by incoming waves. One man rescued the nine-year-old with the help of a life ring thrown by a boater. The older boy was also dragged ashore, but Sigelow had to be rescued himself.

He was given CPR by first responders and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where a spokesman later said he was pronounced dead.

Jason Sigelow left behind two young sons. A GoFundMe page has been started for their benefit.
