A man drowned in the Erie Canal in Macedon on Tuesday, as he tried to save his dog from the canal.

Rescue crews were called to the Macedon canal lock just after 8:30 a.m. and found the man had been fishing with his son when their dog fell into the water. The man jumped in after the dog and was caught in the current and went under. The body was recovered about 90 minutes later.

The dog was rescued further down the canal, and the boy remained on shore and was not hurt.
