A Castile man is being held without bail after attempting to kill Wyoming County Sheriff Gregory Rudolph.
State Police say 48-year-old Lynn Hall has been charged with first degree attempted murder, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
They say Sheriff Rudolph was driving to work in Attica Tuesday morning when a car began tailgating him and flashing its lights. The sheriff pulled over to see if the driver needed help. They say that’s when Hall confronted the sheriff at the door to his car, began fighting with him and tried to grab the sheriff’s gun.
Both men struggled and fell to the ground. Hall allegedly pulled a knife and threatened to kill the sheriff. Two newspaper delivery workers and an off-duty state trooper passed by, saw what was happening and intervened. Sheriff Rudolph suffered non-life threatening injuries. Hall is being held without bail.
Sheriff Rudolph told troopers he recognized Hall has a man who had applied for a pistol permit and come to the Sheriff’s Office the day before to check on its progress.
