The man shot by a police officer while dragging that officer with his car last week has now been arraigned on charges of robbery, assault, resisting arrest and criminal possession of stolen property.
He was identified as 33-year-old James Brumfield of Rochester, who likely tried to flee because he had six outstanding warrants from three different area jurisdictions and was driving a stolen car.
Police say Brumfield stole two 18-packs of Budweiser from a gas station at the corner of Culver Road and University Avenue just before midnight last Thursday. An officer walked into the business just after he fled and was notified of the theft. He chased Brumfield to the parking lot and ordered him out of his car, yanking the driver’s side door open. Brumfield then took off, with the officer wedged between the door and the door frame. The officer was dragged across the parking lot before managing to fire a shot at Brumfield that hit him in the upper body. Officers caught up with Brumfield about a mile away and arrested him. The officer sustained minor injuries.
