Rochester City Council Member and former City School Board President Malik Evans is running for Mayor of Rochester. Evans is challenging fellow Democrat Lovely Warren, who just announced she’ll be seeking a third term.
Evans released a video and news releases on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, speaking on the need to build bridges within the community and promising an administration of “trust and transparency.”
After serving on City Council since 2017, and School Board President from 2008 to 2013, Evans starts the campaign as the most serious challenger to emerge to Mayor Warren. Warren has close to $122,000 in her campaign fund, but faces challenges including anger over her handling of the Daniel Prude case, and the fact that she’s facing a criminal election fraud case arising from her last campaign.
The Warren campaign immediately released a statement saying “all over the country, unfortunately it’s been our brothers that have been first in line to take on sisters. The powers that be playbook hasn’t changed since the days of slavery.”
