Macy’s says it will be closing its store at the Marketplace Mall in Henrietta. A press release says Marketplace is one of a number of stores that will close by spring.

Macy’s is closing 68 stores  nationwide by the end of 2017. The company is restructuring its brick-and-mortar retail operations. They hope to profit from sale of valuable real estate and improve profitability. They claim the reorganization will save Macy’s $550 million a year.  But it means 77 employees of the Macy’s Henrietta store will be looking for new jobs

Wilmorite is in the process of converting the Marketplace into an outlet center. Dennis Wilmot of Wilmorite says Macy’s decision shows the rapidly changing landscape of retail, and he says it’s a good thing his company started planning for Marketplace before this announcement was made. Wilmot says he can’t comment on plans for the 149,000 square foot Macy’s site, but the efforts to transform Marketplace into a regional outlet center will continue.
