Help is coming for the badly rundown Lyell Avenue bridge over Route 390….and half-a-dozen other bridges along the I-390 Corridor in Gates.
Governor Cuomo’s Office has announced that $10.9 million has been released to begin fabricating steel for a brand new Lyell Avenue overpass. A chunk of concrete fell off that badly deteriorated bridge on May 31st…..smashing a car’s sunroof.
The State Transportation Department has been planning replacement of that bridge and maintenance upgrades to others on I-390 and 490 that are all aging badly. The corridor carries about 200,000 cars and trucks a day and is a vital transportation and business link for the entire region.
The state plans to start tearing out the Lyell Avenue bridge next spring, doing the work in stages to maintain two-way traffic. Painting and maintenance on the other bridges where the two expressways come together are already underway.
