It’s barely spring, but highway construction season is underway.
Gates Supervisor Mark Assini says construction began today on replacing the Lyell Avenue Bridge over the 390 Expressway. Lane closures are a couple of weeks away and the project will take about a year-and-a half to complete.
The south side of the bridge will be done first while traffic shifts to the north side, then the opposite side will be done. It’s a $11 million project that also includes repairs and upgrades to six other bridges in the area. A lot of the work will be done overnight to minimize the traffic impact.
Last June, a chunk of concrete fell from the bottom of the Lyell Avenue bridge and hit a car passing on 390 below. Temporary work was done to shore it up until this project got started.
