Reaction is still flowing in to Verizon’s announcement that it’s closing its Henrietta customer service call center. Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo calls Verizon’s decision “very disappointing” and says her administration is working with local companies to find jobs for the more than 600 employees who want to stay in the Rochester area.
The Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce has also pledged its help.
Governor Andrew Cuomo isn’t pleased that Verizon gave his office just 20 minutes notice of the closing. He calls it “an egregious example of corporate abuse.”
Verizon is giving its 640 employees in Henrietta either a severance package or assistance in moving to another city where they have customer service jobs available. Some have been offered jobs in North Carolina. Verizon announced that five of its call centers around the country will close by January 27th. It announced layoffs from its retail stores last week…blaming a slowdown in growth of wireless device sales.
