The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is looking to set up a “Virtual Neighborhood Watch” program.

Sheriff Tom Dougherty is asking people who have security camera systems that record to put their systems on a confidential database. When a crime or suspicious condition takes place, deputies could locate the nearest cameras that might have eyes on the situation and access the video. Right now, the sheriff says they don’t know where private cameras are located and going door-to-door to locate them takes considerable time.

Dougherty says the “virtual neighborhood watch” would only be called on when there’s an investigation in a particular neighborhood. He says they’re not asking for open access, and would get a signed consent form each time they ask to see a camera feed.
