There were lights in the sky over Lake Ontario Tuesday night, prompting a lot of social media chatter speculating what they were.

As in the past, the Canadian Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton was conducting flare training. They were dropping parachute flares from aircraft directly across the lake from Rochester.

Canadian authorities say they’re used to illuminate rescue scenes and are visible for long distances over the water.
