The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and Eastview Mall have partnered to install license plate scanners at all entrances to the mall campus.
Phil Povero says the license plate readers scan every vehicle coming in and leaving the mall. Their goal is to disrupt criminal activity, especially the growing phenomenon of organized groups shoplifting from malls and selling the stolen merchandise online. The readers can flag license plates linked to such gangs as well as vehicles on watch lists or reported as stolen.
The readers and connecting equipment were funded through a Department of Homeland Security grant and money from the Justice Department.
