The New York State Legislature has approved a “budget extender” requested by Governor Cuomo after he and the top leadership of the Senate and Assembly failed to reach a budget agreement on time.
The extender continues the current budget through the end of May, avoiding a state government shutdown and continuing to pay state employees
The governor’s office says it also authorizes $16.4 billion in capital spending for roads, bridges, water systems and other critical infrastructure. Lawmakers will keep working on the issues dividing them, mainly the governor’s push to end the practice of treating 16-and-17-year-old criminal offenders as adults. The State Senate opposes it.
