A bipartisan group of state lawmakers has introduced legislation in Albany that would block construction of a major trash incinerator project in the Finger Lakes.
Circular EnerG LLC is planning a large-scale trash incinerator at the former Seneca Army Depot in Romulus. It would handle thousands of tons of trash per day, shipped in by truck and rail from a wide area of the Northeast.
Senators Rachel May, Pamela Helming, and Assembly Member Michael Cusick are introducing the bill in both houses with support from Assembly Members Brian Kolb and Phil Palmesano. It would prohibit development of trash incinerators in the Finger Lakes Watershed. It’s the same bill that passed the Senate last year, but failed to make it in the Assembly.
