Tomas Gomez earns his USL-leading 8th clean sheet of the season.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The two longstanding USL rival Rochester Rhinos and Pittsburgh Riverhounds battled to a 0-0 draw on Saturday night in front of 3,269 fans at Capelli Sport Stadium.

Rhinos goalkeeper Tomas Gomez took sole control of the USL lead in clean sheets with his 8th of the season following a 4-save performance. His best effort came in the 90th minute when Riverhounds forward Chevaughn Walsh hit a curling effort towards the far post that required Gomez to soar through the air to make a beautiful diving save.

Rochester had much of the momentum late in the game and moments before Gomez’s save, the Rhinos nearly won the match in spectacular fashion. Defender Bradley Kamdem Fewo got loose on the left wing and served up a tasty cross that substitute Brandon Beresford volleyed just over the bar, denying the Rhinos all three points.

Pittsburgh worked well on the counterattack, which led to an 11-7 shot advantage despite being out-possessed by the Rhinos by a 57-43% margin. In the 19th minute, Walsh had the first serious opportunity of the match when he fired a blast from about 22 yards that rattled the goal stanchion.

The Rhinos continued to be dangerous on set pieces, nearly finding the back of the net 25 minutes into the match. Captain Kenardo Forbes’ corner found the head of center back Ryan Felix, who had his goalbound header cleared away.

The most talked about moment came in the 88th minute when a Pittsburgh player fell on top of the ball inside the box for a considerable amount of time without a stoppage in play, much to the displeasure of the Rhinos players.

Rayane Boukemia left the match late after coming on as a substitute due to a shoulder injury. We will provide updates as they become available.

The Rhinos next match is Wednesday, July 26 at 7:05 pm as they take on Toronto FC 2. The first 2,500 fans will receive a cell-phone wallet holder, courtesy of KeyBank. We’ll also be giving away a wine tour + limo combo, and we’ll be having a live grilling demonstration with Dinosaur’s Bar-B-Que’s executive chef Leland Avellino.
