The Landmark Society of Western New York is out with its “Five to Revive,” the annual listing of historic structures worthy of preservation and redevelopment across the region.

The list starts with the former Rochester Brewing Company complex on Cliff Street just north of the High Falls. It’s one of the few surviving 19th Century brewery structures left in Rochester and is considered at risk. Most of what’s left is the Italianate brick office and the southern part of the brewery. The rest burned in a major fire in 1985. The society calls it a unique redevelopment opportunity in a unique location.

Other worthy structures include a block of stone commercial buildings in the Wyoming County Village of Perry; the Dove Block in the City of Geneva and the Lake Ontario State Parkway with its unique sandstone bridges.

The society says we also should take steps to preserve the traditional trades and crafts needed to historically renovate and preserve these buildings. Many of those who have the skills across the region are hitting retirement age.
