Rochester tops the Detroit Waza Flo to secure 2nd place in the Eastern Division.
HENRIETTA, N.Y. — The Rochester Lancers tallied 3 quick goals late in the second quarter Friday night at the sold out Dome Arena en route to a 10-5 victory over the Detroit Waza Flo to secure a playoff berth in the MASL 2 league.
The victory gives Rochester a 7-4 record, and second place in the Eastern Division. The Waza Flo dropped to 7-5 and third place. The Lancers won the season series from Detroit with a 3-1 record.
Despite outshooting Detroit 14-5 in the first quarter, the match was tied 3-3 at the end of the period.
The Lancers took control of the game in the final 4 minutes of the half with 3 goals to break a 4-4 tie.
Jeremy Ortiz, who finished with a hat trick, Gary Boughton, and Michael Cunningham all scored in the final 3:34 of the half to give the Lancers a 7-4 advantage at the intermission.
The Waza Flo applied the pressure in the second half as the visitors from the Motor City outshot the Lancers 18-5, but only managed 1 goal. Rochester scored 3 markers in the second half.
Boughton also tallied a hat trick as player/coach Doug Miller, Boomer Steigleman, and Jake Schindler accounted for the other goals. Boughton also added 2 assists to pace the team with 5 points. Schindler finished with 3 points as the Irondequoit native picked up 2 assists.
The Lancers close out the regular season Saturday night at the Dome Arena against the Muskegon Risers.
