The team signs a local sportswriter as its Director of Communications.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Lancers announced that the season opening games Friday and Saturday at the Dome Arena are both sold out. However, there were 20 season tickets left on hold, as of Sunday.

The team also announced that they have added longtime Democrat and Chronicle sportswriter Jeff DiVeronica as their Director of Communications.

Rochester plays the Detroit Waza Flo at the IDE Family Field at the Dome Arena, 2695  E. Henrietta Road, on Friday, and the Cincinnati Swerve on Saturday at the Dome. Both games start at 7 pm as the gates open at 6 pm both nights.

The Lancers are coached by Doug Miller, the all-time leading scorer in Rochester Rhinos history and a former Lancers star and Major Indoor Soccer League MVP.

Miller was among Rochester soccer stars DiVeronica covered in his 25-year journalism career. That list included former FIFA Player of the Year, Olympic and World Cup champion, Abby Wambach. DiVeronica chronicled her entire career from its start in the early 1990s at Mercy High to Wambach’s 2015 retirement.

Named the Top Digital Journalist in 2014 by New York State Associated Press, DiVeronica’s coverage helped fuel soccer’s popularity in Rochester. He was there for every Rhinos championship in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2015 and also covered Western New York Flash women’s title teams in 2011, 2012 and 2016 (NWSL).

DiVeronica will write, produce videos and assist with social media for the Lancers, as well as help with game-day operations. A two-time Rochester Press-Radio Club’s Sportswriter of the Year, DiVeronica is in St. John Fisher College’s Communication/Journalism Hall of Fame and was a 2014 inductee to the Frontier Field Walk of Fame.

He is a former co-host of “Kick This! The Soccer Sam Show,” with indoor Lancers founder SoccerSam Fantauzzo. DiVeronica also has hosted the Connors and Ferris High School Sports Show on Fox Sports 1280 and iHeartRadio for 16 years.

Jeff and his wife, Chrissy, and Daughter, Francesca, reside in Webster.
