The team makes a donation to a child with AML.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Knighthawks ended their 2017 season with a big win. Now, they are kicking off their offseason with a big assist. The Knighthawks announced on Thursday that they are making a donation of $2,160 to Brady’s Bunch.
The Knighthawks raised $1,160 during the 50/50 raffle at the regular season home finale on April 28. The remainder of the money was contributed by the Knighthawks players.
“We are all connected in the lacrosse community for our love for the sport,” said Knighthawks forward Dan Dawson. “When people are in need it is our duty to help and pay it forward. Brady had inspired us more than we could ever help the Wein family.”
Eight-year-old Brady Wein has a special connection to the team after meeting the players on March 17 in New England. For Dawson, his tie to Brady’s dad, Mike, goes all the way back to 2007, when Dan was playing in Arizona.
The two reconnected this year after Dawson learned about Brady’s courageous battle against Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). After texts, calls and emails, Dan and Mike arranged for Brady to spend a day with the Knighthawks. Brady received the full NLL experience: leading the team out on the field, warming up with the players and hanging out in the locker room before the start of the game.
“It was awesome meeting Brady,” said Knighthawks defenseman Brad Gillies. “To see a kid who has had so many negatives thrown at him have such a positive outlook on life is truly inspiring.”
On April 28, the players chipped in to help Brady and his family by donating to Brady’s Bunch, which is a non-profit organization that recognizes the “opportunity to achieve a more profound impact on youth: to inspire, motivate, and support participants to achieve success both on and off the field while supporting needs of other children like Brady.”
