Torrey VanEvery agrees to a 1-year deal with Rochester.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Knighthawks announced on Friday the signing of Torrey VanEvery to a one-year deal. The Six Nations product is no stranger to the team, having first signed with Rochester in October of 2012 after attending the team’s tryout camp.
“It felt amazing being on the floor with the guys again,” said VanEvery, who was added to the Knighthawks practice squad. “It’s great to be back here.”
On Wednesday, the 26-year-old wasted little time getting accustomed to the rhythm of practice and finding his groove on the left side of the offense. After finishing up the training session at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, he already was focused on next Wednesday’s practice and Opening Night on Thursday, Dec. 29.
“It’s kind of hard to sleep I am so pumped up,” said VanEvery. “I’m excited for another practice.”
This past year, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound forward completed his fifth season in the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax), posting four points in five games with the Ohsweken Demons. He played four seasons with the Demons, while spending one with the Iroquois Ironmen. In his career, he scored 47 goals and added 42 assists in 40 games. He also won the Creator’s Cup in 2012 with Ohsweken and in 2013 with the Iroquois.
“Playing for two championship teams gave me a lot of experience and confidence,” said VanEvery.
By winning the title in 2013, VanEvery completed his second back-to-back championship run. With the Six Nations Rebels, he won Founders Cups in 2007 and 2008. In his four-year Junior “B” career, he collected 52 goals and 78 assists for 130 points in 56 games. In 2011, VanEvery was promoted to the Junior “A” level and responded with 15 goals and 29 assists in just 19 games.
After completing his junior career, he advanced to the Senior “B” level, where he again showed off his scoring tough. Over three seasons, he connected for 59 goals and dished out 55 assists in just 32 games. In 2012, he had his best offensive season, recording 42 points with the Six Nations Slash.
VanEvery’s hard work has finally paid off as he will travel to Rochester next week for Opening Night. He joins Rochester’s practice squad, which includes Dan Lomas, Luke Laszkiewicz, and John Rae.
