Transition rookie Sean Young inks a 1-year deal with Rochester.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Knighthawks announced on Thursday that they have signed former Syracuse Orange standout Sean Young to a one-year deal.
“Rochester was a team I grew up watching,” said Young. “So when I got the phone call, I was really excited about the opportunity.”
Young played at Syracuse University for three seasons and was named an Honorable Mention All-American in 2015. In 2013, he was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team after holding Denver All-American Wes Berg without a shot in the national semifinals. In 2012, Young began his college career at Towson, where he appeared in 14 games as a freshman. At the Division I level, the shutdown defenseman played in 62 games and collected 57 ground balls.
In 2015, after graduating from SU, he was signed by the Georgia Swarm. The 24-year-old made his NLL debut on Jan. 7, 2017 versus the Saskatchewan Rush. This season, the Oakville, Ontario native has played in seven games and notched one assist and 16 loose balls.
Knighthawks head coach Mike Hasen has been impressed so far by what he has seen from the rookie.
“He is young, big, mobile and can be physical inside,” said Hasen. “He can get up the floor for us once he plays that hard shift of ‘D.'”
To make room for the transition player, the Knighthawks released defenseman John Rae.
Young now is available to make his Knighthawks debut on Saturday in the showdown against the Buffalo Bandits.
“It’s a new team, so I want to make a really good impression,” he said. “I am just excited to play.”
