ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Knighthawks finished off a disappointing weekend with a 16-12 loss to the Georgia Swarm Saturday night on the Connors & Ferris Field at the Blue Cross Arena before 7,478 fans.
Prior to the game, the Knighthawks retired John Grant Jr.’s jersey No. 24, making his the first jersey number to be retired in the 25 years of the franchise.
Grant, who was drafted with the first overall pick back in 1999, spent 11 of his 18 professional seasons with the Knighthawks. He left as the all-time leader in goals (433) and points (894). To add to his legacy, “Junior” won a 2007 National Lacrosse League MVP and Championship Game MVP as he led the Knighthawks to their second league title.
Kyle Jackson tied the score 1-1 for Rochester before Holden Cattoni recorded a natural hat trick for the Swarm, which chased Hawks starting goalie Angus Goodleaf for rookie Warren Hill, who made 40 saves.
“We just dug ourselves a hole too deep early that we couldn’t get out of,” said Knighthawks coach Mike Hasen. “It wasn’t Angus’s fault. You can’t put the blame on him.”
Goodleaf saw 63 shots Friday night in the 15-14 overtime loss in Philadelphia to the Wings.
Cody Jamieson paced the Hawks with 7 points (1g, 6a) as Austin Shanks led in goals with 4 (5 points) and Cory Vitarelli collected 4 points (3g, 1a). Joe Resetarits also had 4 points (2g, 2a) as Jackson finished with 3 (2g, 1a).
The Knighthawks were without faceoff specialist Jake Withers for the second straight game as he is out with an injury. After going 9-for-33 Friday night on faceoffs, the Hawks went 12-for-31 against the Swarm.
Georgia’s Randy Staats led all scorers with 11 points (3g, 8a) as Cattoni finished with 10 (5g, 5a) and Lyle Thompson 9 (4g, 5a).
The Knighthawks travel to Connecticut on Feb. 9 to take on the New England Black Wolves.
