Rochester signs Marty Hill and place him on the practice squad.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Knighthawks announced on Friday that they have signed transition man Marty Hill. The 27-year-old from Six Nations returns to the Knighthawks for the second time in his career. Hill moves to the practice squad, while Josh Becker goes to the hold out list.
“It feels great to be back with the Knighthawks,” said Hill. “They’re a team that wants to win a championship every year. I’m glad to be back and part of the organization.”
This season, Hill has played five games with the Six Nations Snipers of the Arena Lacrosse League (ALL), posting one goal and four assists. By signing with the Knighthawks, Hill rejoins the team that drafted him in 2010. Hill, who broke into the NLL with Buffalo, was first signed by the Knighthawks in January of 2015.
It was Hill’s lacrosse IQ and versatility that prompted the Knighthawks to bring him back for another look.
“He is a piece we have been looking for,” said Knighthawks head coach Mike Hasen. “He can play a shift on ‘D’ and we have confidence in him playing in the offensive end (as well). It’s a role he has played on other teams.”
Prior to playing in the Arena Lacrosse League, Hill excelled in the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) for four seasons. In 19 games, he notched 18 goals and 39 assists for 57 points. In 2012, he won the inaugural Canadian Lacrosse League’s Creator’s Cup with the Ohsweken Demons.
Hill played his junior ball with the hometown Six Nations Arrows. Over three seasons, from 2009-11, he contributed 38 goals and 73 assists for 111 points in 38 games. Prior to making the jump to Junior “A” lacrosse, Hill played with the Six Nations Rebels. In six seasons of Junior “B” lacrosse with the Six Nations Rebels, he won two Founders Cup titles (2007-08). Hill was also a standout at Herkimer County Community College, where he was an All-Region and Conference Midfielder of the Year selection.
On Wednesday, Hill joined the Knighthawks for their weekly practice and was thrilled to get another shot at the NLL.
“Practicing with the team was great,” he said. “The Knighthawks brought me back to play a different role. It’s one that I’m more comfortable with and can contribute to the team more effectively. Last time I was here I was an offensive player, but I have since changed to more of a transition game. I can play defense and help carry the ball up and produce scoring chances. I just want to help the team any way I can.”
