A federal judge in Syracuse issued a temporary restraining order on Thursday, blocking parts of New York’s new gun law. The judge sided with a shooting sports organization in saying the laws are unconstitutional.

The new law required applicants for a pistol permit to submit three years of their social media posts for review, and it set a lengthy list of places where guns could not be carried, including nearly every public building and Times Square in Manhattan. The judge blocked those requirements.

The judge’s order upholds banning concealed carry of weapons in schools, government buildings, polling places and houses of worship, excluding individuals tasked to keep the peace during religious observations. Otherwise anyone with a permit can legally carry their weapon once the ruling takes effect after three business days.

State Attorney General Letitia James said she will appeal the order.
