Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips has announced he is returning to the Buffalo Bills next season via his social media accounts on Monday.

Phillips tweeted, “Done deal… LETS GO BILLS MAFIA!!!!!”

The move helps solidify further solidify the Bills’ defensive line. With Kyle Williams’ retirement and Phillips’ pending free agency, a position of strength was on the cusp of becoming a hole on the roster.

Details of the deal have not been released at this time. NYup.com reports that Phillips’ deal is a one-year contract.

Phillips went through a bit of a renaissance when after being claimed on waivers from the Miami Dolphins in early October of last season. In 12 games with the Bills, the 2015 second-round pick registered 19 total tackles, three passes defended, and a fumble recovery.

His signing added depth the Buffalo’s defensive line rotation. He fit in well., providing a decent pass rush push from the interior of the defensive line. Phillips’ pass rush score of 64.9 was second to Williams’ 65.5 grade in the same category, according to Pro Football Focus.

At locker clean out day following Buffalo’s season finale, Phillips indicated that he wanted to return to the Bills and compete for Williams’ old starting position, stating: “The word on the street is the Bills are looking for a new 3-technique, and I think I’m the best candidate,” Phillips said.

That position is the one Williams previously played.

Phillips recorded 63 tackles and 5.5 sacks during his three-plus seasons in a Miami uniform. However, his work ethic was questioned by the Dolphins staff, and the 6-foot-6, 341-pound defensive lineman was sent packing. After Miami was thrashed 38-7 at the hands of New England in Week 4, the Dolphins cut him loose.

The move to an AFC rival paid dividends for the player and the team. Now, Phillips looks to fill the void left behind by Williams. The 13-year pro led the group with 659 defensive snaps last year, and it looks as if the Phillips, entering his fifth season in the NFL, will fill some of that void.

With Star Lotulelei, Harrison Phillips and Jordan Phillips in the fold, the Bills will look to fill out their interior line via the draft or free agency. However, their player selection will determine how much of a challenge the former Oklahoma standout for playing time. While general manager Brandon Beane has discussed that he does not necessarily draft for need, a top-end lineman would limit some of Phillips’ snaps. Nevertheless, the defensive line will not be a top priority for the Bills unless an elite prospect falls into their laps with the No. 9 pick.

Retaining Phillips on a one-year deal could prove to be a “prove-it deal.”
