Two Rochester firefighters suffered injuries and were treated at the hospital Friday evening after a double house on Jay Street went up in a two alarm fire..
The fire department says its crews arrived at 888 Jay Street to find heavy fire coming from the front and west side of the two-and-a-half-story house, and the fire already threatening to spread to the house next door. They called a second alarm because of the threat to that second house.
One adult and four children in the lower apartment got out safely, as did the upstairs tenant. Nobody was home at the neighboring house. It took an hour to bring the fire under control, and the house was so heavily damaged that crews tore it down overnight.
The Red Cross is helping the displaced families, and the cause is under investigation.
