Irondequoit Police have put out the word about a mail scam that’s apparently county-wide.
Their Twitter alerts say people have stolen mail out of people’s home mail boxes, looking for personal checks people have dropped in the mail to pay bills. People have found the checks were stolen and their checking account numbers used by an identify thief to steal their money.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says there was a similar case on Winton Road in Henrietta.
Police advise not leaving outgoing mail in your box at home with the flag up for the mailman. Drop it at the post office to foil these guys.
