The Town of Irondequoit has extended its State of Emergency declaration for a second time because of continued high water on Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay.
The lake has come down about four inches from its record high of May, but lakeshore flooding remains a serious concern anytime high winds blow from the northeast. The extension continues the speed limits for boaters on Irondequoit Bay and offshore on Lake Ontario, to prevent boat wakes from causing more erosion damage.
International regulators were only able to lower the lake by 3.5 inches last month despite releasing record amounts of water down the St. Lawrence River. The inflow in a wetter-than-normal June was nearly equal to the maximum amount they can release without flooding Montreal. The amount of inflow was the second-highest ever recorded.
