A proposal to convert a former Catholic school in Irondequoit into an apartment project is raising controversy in Irondequoit. It brought neighbors packing into town hall last night for a public hearing on the St. Thomas the Apostle Church and School project.

Capstone LLC wants to rezone the property at St. Paul Boulevard and Colebrook drive to commercial. The building has been empty since the school closed down.

Concerns raised last night include what could happen if the project fails and is sold to another owner or becomes subsidized housing. Some speakers say there’s already a lot of rental property in Irondequoit and more could bring down home prices.

This was only a hearing; the town board has not yet scheduled a vote on the rezoning.
