A rising wave of calls for Governor Andrew Cuomo to resign or be impeached has accompanied Tuesday’s report from the State Attorney General, saying Cuomo abused at least 11 women.
Both of New York’s U.S. Senators and President Joe Biden said Cuomo should step down. The State Assembly met in emergency session and Speaker Carl Heastie said lawmakers will move expeditiously with an impeachment investigation. Heastie said it’s become clear that the governor has lost the confidence of the Assembly Democratic majority and can no longer remain in office.
As with a Presidential impeachment, the Assembly would vote to bring articles of impeachment against the governor, and the State Senate and justices of the Court of Appeals would hold a trial. Only one New York governor has ever been removed from office, William Sulzer in 1913.
