Rochester police, Irondequoit police and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are beginning a three-phase plan to curb illegal dirt bike and ATV riding on public streets.
With the warmer weather, large numbers of unregistered dirt bikes and ATVs have been seen on city streets, often running red lights and swarming through traffic during good weather. Two fatal crashes have occurred in the city.
A notice from Irondequoit Police Chief Alan Laird says there have been numerous complaints and police have formed an inter-agency team to proactively address the issue. Police say their plan begins with education on the dangers of riding unregistered dirt bikes on the streets, enforcement by arrest and seizure of the bikes, and public awareness to call 911 if people see this happening.
They’re also in the process of setting up a tip line people will be able to call to provide information to the task force about illegal riders.
