As a major rain and ice event approaches the Great Lakes region this weekend, regulators at the Lake Ontario – St. Lawrence River Board are keeping an eye on what it might do to spring lake levels.

The board says Lake Ontario rose about half an inch over the last week with relatively dry weather and now stands just below 246 feet. That’s above average, but more than a foot less than when flooding began a year ago.

The regulators say on their Facebook page that if we get unusually heavy April and May rains, the lake may start a rapid rise again and lead to a new round of lakeshore flooding. They say there’s no immediate threat and they’re keeping outflows as high as possible given the safety of ships using the St. Lawrence Seaway.
