Six dogs were rescued from a burning house on Hawley Street in Rochester late last night…one of the dogs given oxygen by first responders in the back of an ambulance.

The fire broke out about 11:15 p.m. with flames pouring out of the attic and second floor windows when firefighters arrived.

Everyone and their pets escaped, but firefighters were hampered by a dead hydrant that failed to work, forcing them to call in more crews to reach another one.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the Red Cross is aiding the residents.
