David Hurlbut’s career-high 11-strikeout performance goes by the board vs. the RailRiders.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Red Wings starting pitcher David Hurlbut struck out a career-high 11 batters, but the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders came away with a 5-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon before a paid crowd of 6,932 fans at Frontier Field.

“I felt really good,” Hurlbut said. “It was one of my best games of the year. It was nice to see it translate into some success.

“Regardless of how the offense does, you always want to try and give the team a chance to succeed. It didn’t work out today but some of those things are out of my control. I control what I can to give my team a chance to win.”

It marked the second consecutive game where the Wings starting hurler set a career-high in strikeouts. Nik Turley fanned 15 RailRiders on Tuesday night in the 8-1 win.

Hurlbut’s teammates managed just four hits in the loss.

“At this point it’s entirely about offense,” said Red Wings manager Mike Quade. “Unfortunately we didn’t get enough done to back a really, really nice start from Hurlbut. The bullpen was fine…To me we’ve got to continue to work on how to score runs and get some people going.

“I’m thrilled to death the way we’re going about our work, but we need to see some results. I’ll show up here tomorrow and hopefully the results are better.”

SWB took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a leadoff double by Clint Frazier and single from Kyle Higashioka.

The Red Wings tied the game in the sixth. Zack Granite continued his hot streak with a single, then he stole second and moved to third on a fly out to right field. With two gone, Matt Hague reached on an error, which allowed Granite to score from third.

“He’s done his part in making us go,” Quade said of Granite. “It’s crazy to battle a club and be in a tie game in the seventh. It’s too much to ask day in and day out. We’ve got to put four or five, six spot up from time to time.”

The visitors from the Keystone State added two runs in the seventh on a double by Gleyber Torres. The ‘Riders tacked on two more runs in the ninth to secure the victory.
