Governor Andrew Cuomo is sending ten military helicopters to Mississippi and Florida in the wake of Hurricane Irma. Cuomo said he will continue to provide resources and assistance to the affected region, citing other state’s willingness to help New York in past crises.
Three of those Blackhawk helicopters are coming from the Air National Guard in Rochester. Major Jeffrey Kneer says their mission is the rescue of stranded people and to transport anything that needs transporting.
Airmen from the National Guard are also helping establish satellite and Internet communication in the affected region.
