A military helicopter said by the National Guard to be a UH-60 Black Hawk crashed and burned Wednesday night off Cheese Factory Road in Mendon.

Three crew members are confirmed dead according to a statement from the National Guard. The burning wreck of the helicopter lay in a field near West Bloomfield Road and Cheese Factory Road. First responders and military personnel are on hand.

The Blackhawk is used by the military for air ambulance and other transport work. The National Guard says this one was assigned to the Air National Guard facility at the Greater Rochester International Airport and was on a routine training mission when something went wrong.

An investigation into the crash is underway.

A police procession escorted the bodies of the soldiers who were on board the helicopter to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.
