Security screening caught a student trying to bring a gun into Monroe High School Monday morning.

Rochester police say they were called to the school on Alexander Street just before 9:00 a.m. after security found the 9 mm Taurus handgun. It was loaded with 12 rounds. The 17-year-old caught with the gun was detained as police continue to investigate.

RPD Lt. Greg Bello said the school has metal detectors and bags are X-rayed as students enter the building.

The Rochester City School District says the gun was detected by daily security measures and there were no threats or safety issues inside the building. They say appropriate action is being taken against the student.
