The group HealthiKids Rochester is pushing the Rochester City Council to cut the speed limit on city streets from 30 to 25.

The initiative has the support of the alternative transportation group Connect Rochester, which says hundreds of people are struck by vehicles while walking or biking every year in Rochester. Many of the incidents that result in death involved speeding.

HealthiKids says cities including Cambridge, Massachusetts, New York and Seattle are lowering their speed limits to make residential streets safer. They’re launching a letter-writing campaign to city council members, urging them to follow suit. They plan to show up at the “Speak to Council” segment of Tuesday night’s City Council meeting to support the idea.
