Greece Supervisor Bill Reilich’s office says the supervisor is sending a local law to the town board that would provide tax assessment relief to residents along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Flooding from record high water levels this spring and earlier this summer caused significant flooding and erosion. State law allows local governments to opt-in to an assessment relief program in such cases, providing property tax reductions for homeowners who suffered losses from the floods. Reilich says homeowners should be aware that while the town is moving forward to consider lowering assessments for the damaged properties, the Greece Central School District hasn’t opted into the plan yet.

Reilich says he plans to formally request Greece Central and Hilton Central schools to accept a one-year assessment reduction on lakeshore properties to help residents trying to rebuild.
