Greece Supervisor Bill Reilich has written to the chair of the International Joint Commission, calling on them to maintain the outflow from Lake Ontario at the maximum level as it was over the winter.
The IJC reduced the outflows last week for the start of the Great Lakes shipping season, but that has interests along the Lake Ontario shoreline worried. Greece and the other towns that were hit by flooding with last spring’s record-high water levels want the outflows down the St. Lawrence River kept at the max, even though it makes sailing riskier for the cargo ships.
The lake isn’t as high this year, but is still higher than average.
Town Hall says Greece is already positioning sandbags and sandbagging equipment around the town in case of flooding. The town previously installed new sewer piping to prevent the system from being flooded and is having the state bring in an aqua-dam as was deployed last spring along Old Edgemere Drive.
