A Greece Olympia High School sophomore was asked to leave a volleyball game Friday evening after he chose to sit in the stands during the national Anthem.

Amiricle Snead says the made the choice to sit or kneel after discussing the issues of race in America with his mother. He says he and a friend sat in the stands during the anthem but made no other demonstration. A teacher approached and told them to leave. Snead says he and his friend questioned the teacher, and the school called police. Snead and his friend left when ordered by police and no charges were filed.

A statement from the Greece Central School District confirms the basic facts but says the student was asked to leave for being disrespectful to the the teacher, not for failing to stand during the anthem. The district says all spectators have the right to decide whether or not to participate in the pledge and the national anthem.
