The Town of Greece is installing pumps and shutoff valves to prevent future high waters on Lake Ontario from flooding back through storm drains and flooding lakeside roads.
During the record spring flooding last year, the town had to bring in more than 40 pumps and keep them running in the flooded areas to keep roads open and prevent flooding the sewer systems. Supervisor Bill Reilich says the town is putting in a permanent pumping system and berms to protect critical areas. They include along Edgemere Drive, Old Edgemere Drive and the Kodak pumping station on Round Pond.
Eleven pumps and piping are being installed. The town is paying out $800,000 for the project and hopes to have it finished by spring.
The town says it will also have sandbags stockpiled early for people who need to protect their homes and businesses from high water.
