The Greece School Board voted this week to end high school senior trips to Disney World, saying the costs are just getting too high for many students to afford.

In a letter to parents of juniors at Olympia, Odyssey and Arcadia, the district says the decision was based partly on trouble supervising students in the parks, but mainly the district’s commitment to “equality and access.”

The district says the trip costs from $1,000 to $1,250 per student, and many seniors can’t afford it. The district says half of the qualified seniors at all three schools qualify for reduced price or free lunches.

Some parents aren’t happy they weren’t given more notice of this decision, saying they and their kids have been raising money for the trip.
