A Republican candidate for Greece Town Board is blaming the Monroe County Republican Committee for forcing him to end his campaign.

Edward Gartz says what he calls an “abysmal and discriminatory decision” by the party and its chair, Greece Supervisor Bill Reilich, invalidated all of his nominating petitions.

Gartz circulated petitions to run for the 2nd Ward Town Council seat in the fall, trying to force a primary against incumbent Republican Brett Granville. He collected more than 400 signatures, with 278 needed to get on the ballot. But the petitions read that Gartz was seeking nomination to “Town Council” instead of “Town Council 2nd Ward.” Those missing two words led the Board of Elections to throw them out.

Gartz says he protested but the only way he could challenge it is by going to court, which is an expensive proposition.
