The Republican majority of the Monroe County Legislature has withdrawn the so-called CABLE Act after heavy pushback from the community.
The Checks and Balance for Legislative Equity act was introduced at Tuesday night’s legislature meeting as a “matter of urgency.” It’s purpose was to limit the county executive’s power to appoint top county officials, and the Republicans wanted to vote on it at the December meeting before Democrat Adam Bello took over as county executive in January.
Its sponsors have now withdrawn the measure.
Bello said on Saturday that this is an opportunity for the community to talk about what happened during the week and to show that voters have stood up for change.
Republicans argued this week it was intended to make county government more transparent and retain some control over county affairs for the legislature. Bello said he’d consider talking with the GOP about it after taking office, but said Republicans wouldn’t be proposing such legislation if Republican Cheryl Dinolfo had won re-election.
