Congressman Lee Zeldin–the Republican Candidate for Governor of New York–was attacked Thursday night at a campaign event in Perinton.
Zeldin was reportedly giving a speech about bail reform at the VFW on Macedon Center Road when a man jumped onto the stage, began yelling at Zeldin, wrestled with him and pulled out a knife. Witnesses say the attacker was tackled by AMVETS National Director Joe Chenelly, Lt. Governor Candidate Alison Esposito and others, and was taken into custody by Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies.
The suspect was identified as 43-year-old David Jakubonis of Fairport, who reportedly told those who restrained him that he was a veteran. Jakubonis is charged with Attempted Assault in the Second Degree (E-Felony). He was arraigned in Perinton Town Court and released on his own recognizance.
Zeldin was apparently uninjured but Esposito appeared to have a lacerated hand. Zeldin was able to resume his speech.
